Dubuque County roads covered in ice - KWWL - Eastern Iowa Breaking News, Weather, Closings

Dubuque County roads covered in ice

DUBUQUE COUNTY (KWWL) -- With Saturday night's winter storm, the big problem is it is deceptively icy. We slid a plastic thermometer along the ground in a gas station parking lot just off of Highway 20; it slid more than fifty feet with only a slight push.

That's the type of conditions drivers are finding along the roads in Dubuque county.

"It's a little deceiving out there. Even though it's starting to get colder, you can't tell that it's getting slick," Joan Mest of Dubuque said.

This truck even had a tough time getting up a slight incline in a parking lot. Salt trucks are making constant rounds on the main roads, like Highway 20, but side roads are a sheet of ice keeping many drivers home.

But even with ice still forming, some are planning to travel slippery roads to get home.

"Hopefully there's some salt. Maybe it can be fine. I will try. I must try," Ahmed Alzahalami of Iowa City said.

With temperatures staying below freezing, drivers will have to battle slick roads overnight and into Sunday.
