Science students showcase projects to legislators

WEST BRANCH (KWWL) -- Science students from West Branch Middle School present their hard work to state legislators.

Saturday, five state legislators attended the school's second Energy and Environment Summit.
Some of the projects included the impact of using mercury in mining gold, how Nintendo WII's can be used as therapy for senior citizens, recycling issues with plastics, issues with blind-spots on vehicles that can lead to backover accidents, and even the health effects of wearing flip-flops.

West Branch Middle School students, under the guidance of teacher Hector Ibarra, have won many national and regional awards in science project competitions in recent years.

One of the projects last year resulted in a state law to encourage recycling of old thermostats containing mercury.

Legislators attending Saturday's meeting were:

State Senator James Hahn of Muscatine
State Senator Robert Dvorsky of Coralville
State Senator David Johnson of Ocheyedan (formerly of West Branch)
State Representative Jeff Kaufmann of Wilton
State Representative Nathan Willems of Mount Vernon
