Manure spill in northeast Iowa reaches tributary

DENVER (AP) -- State environmental officials say a manure release from a dairy near Waterloo has reached an unnamed tributary of Crane Creek.

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources says producers at the Denver Dairy found the release at 5 a.m. Thursday.

The dairy manure had plugged a pipe between the milking parlor and earthen storage basin, but was initially believe to have not reached the stream.

The DNR says the unnamed tributary was affected by an unknown amount of manure that reached an underground tile line.

It's not clear if the spill has killed any fish.

The DNR plans to issue a notice of violation for not reporting the manure spill within six hours of its occurrence or discovery. The investigation continues.
