Post-holiday recycling

Cedar Falls (KWWL) - Green is the color of Christmas in more ways than one.

The Cedar Falls Recycling Center has always seen an increase after the holidays, but this year more people than ever are recycling celebration leftovers.

In the past week, Cedar Valley residents have recycled about twice as much as a typical week.

"The last four years we have seen an increase annually of approximately 1,000 tons," Brian Heath said, "In fact, we got to the point where our bailer can't keep up so we're having to take some of our recyclables from remote sites and direct haul them to city carton."

Styrophone and wrapping paper are typically not recyclable. Heath says you should sort your items at home and come prepared to slide contents down the proper shoot.
