Blackhawk County inmates get more work

WATERLOO (KWWL) -- Some eastern Iowa inmates are not only doing time behind bars, now that have to do work on the outside.

The Black Hawk County jail is using inmates to perform expanded work duties like snow and ice removal and community improvement projects including roadside cleanup.

Sheriff Tony Thompson says the inmates also help with laundry and cleaning at the jail and will have expanded outdoor duties as the weather improves.

Thompson says inmates do get something for their work... credit.  They are credited $65 per day to put toward room and board expenses that the jail charges them while they're in jail.

The inmates must already be sentenced and volunteer for the extra work. Thompson says it's a "win-win" situation for the inmates and the community.
