Hawk fans sacrifice time, money and sleep at Outback Bowl

TAMPA, FLORIDA (KWWL)-- Iowa Hawkeye fans traveled to Tampa by the thousands to cheer on the black and gold.

They sacrificed time, money and sleep.

It was a week in the sun for Hawk fans in Tampa. On game day it was supposed to be all business, but it turned out to be another party.

"Hawkeyes all the way," fans shouted.

Just hours after ringing in the new year, Hawk fans started pulling into the parking lot of the Outback Bowl before the first sunrise of 2009.

"What time did you get here this morning? About 6:45, one of the first few cars in," said Andy O'Neill of North Liberty.

"It wasn't easy, but we went with a little less sleep," said Joe Loucarich of Davenport. "But we look forward to the game. We get the energy going for us."

"You just do it, it's for the Hawkeyes, you gotta be here," noted Courtney Duncan, an Iowa Alum.

11:00 a.m. starts are nothing new for these fans when it comes to Hawkeye football; sleep is secondary.

"There is no recovery, you just keep going all night long.'' a fan added.

On the field the Hawks were equally awake, grabbing control from the start and never letting up.  Neither did the fans.

Hawkeye fans were certainly happy to get away from the cold in Iowa for the warm weather in Tampa. Now they will leave Florida happy for the third time in five years.
