Lack of road funds could increase gas tax

Waterloo (KWWL) - A major lack of state funds for road repairs may force the Iowa Legislature to increase the gas tax.

The Iowa DOT finds that critical road and bridge construction needs adds up to more than $200 million.

When the legislature reconvenes in mid-January, the revised projections could spark debate among lawmakers over raising the state's gasoline tax.

DOT officials note that each 1 cent increase in the state's gasoline tax generates $21 million, and that repealing the ethanol tax credit would equal $6 million more a year.
