Bank robberies in Iowa near lowest level ten years

DES MOINES (AP) -- The number of bank robberies is down in Iowa, near the lowest level in a decade.

Between Dec. 10, 2007 and Dec. 10, 2008, 30 bank and credit union robberies were reported in the state, including 13 that involved weapons.

That's well off the statewide annual average of 44 per-year in the last decade.

The lowest total in the last 10 years was 2005, when 28 financial institutions were robbed. The highest was 2001 59 robberies were reported.

Criminal Justice Professor Clemens Bartollas with the University of Northern Iowa says the lower numbers are no surprise.

He says bank heists have dropped in recent years as surveillance has become more detailed and response by law enforcement has become quicker.

He says the law enforcement has gotten too good.
