Dr. DeAnn Fitzgerald: world vision

by Sunny Layne

CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -- Many of us take our five senses for granted, but one Eastern Iowa optometrist understands the value of sight.   She shares her sense of "vision" with her patients in Iowa and all over the world.

News channel seven's Sunny Layne introduces us to Doctor DeAnn Fitzgerald: Someone You Should Know.

Punching, swinging, computer games... It's not your ordinary trip to the eye doctor. But no one would describe Dr. Deann Fitzgerald as an ordinary doctor.

She sees an average of 75 people a day in her Cedar Rapids' private practice that has expanded three times in four years.

Aside from her private practice, Dr. Fitzgerald wanted to help children struggling with learning, and families who couldn't afford to get help.  Dr. Fitzgerald opened a vision and occupational clinic "vision in motion," under her nonprofit group called spanda incorporated, spanda meaning movement. Her motto is "it takes only a single idea, a single action to move the world"."

Wanting to take her "sense of vision" to the world, Dr, Fitzgerald began Eye Care Kenya, where her nonprofit built a vision, dental and medical clinic -- with all proceeds going straight to this small village.

All this work didn't go without notice.  Dr. Fitzgerald just received the Waypoint Women of Achievement award as well as the Pillar of the Community award. In its nearly 30 year history, only five people have received the Pillar award.

"It's been great to be in the community," said Dr. Fitzgerald.  "And I just wanted to give back - that's why I offer this program, so they can actualize their potential."

She hopes those she touches realize so-called "ordinary" people like herself have extraordinary abilities to move the world.
