Hiawatha man faces drug charges in apartment evacuation

HIAWATHA (KWWL) -- A Hiawatha man faces charges after Cedar Rapids police evacuated an apartment building for six hours.

Officers evacauted the apartment building in the Cedar Trail Village on East Boyson Road on Sunday after finding potentially dangerous materials. Police say someone heard what sounded like a gun being cocked in a neighbors apartment and called authorities.

When officers arrived, no one answered, so police kicked down the door. They found a loaded handgun and a safe marked "explosives' inside the apartment.

Police won't comment and what materials they found.  However, Hiawatha police issued a news releasing saying Nathan Kelley, 24, is charged with possession of a controlled substance (prescription), posession of drug parapernalia and interfering with official acts.
