Iowa City man found in Mississippi River wanted for domestic assault

IOWA CITY (KWWL) -- Iowa City police tell KWWL the person found in a SUV pulled from the Mississippi River at LeClaire was wanted in connection with a domestic assault.

Monday, the Iowa Department of Public Safety identified the man as Michael John Hodges, 51 from Iowa City.

Police were called to a domestic assault around 9:00am Sunday at a home on the 3000 block of East Court Street in Iowa City.  Officers say they found a victim seriously hurt and issued an alert for police to find Hodges who was driving a red SUV.

An Iowa State trooper spotted the red SUV early Sunday afternoon in LeClaire.  Before authorities could contact Hodges, officers say he drove into the river.

Sgt. Denise Brotherton says Hodges told the victim he intended to kill himself and later sent text messages to others saying he intended to harm himself. Police tracked his cell phone, and a state trooper pulled him over about 1:15 p.m. Sunday. That's when the man drove into the river.

It took about two hours for emergency crews and a tow truck to pull the SUV from the river.
