Take holiday pictures like the pros

WATERLOO (KWWL) -- Digital cameras are a hot gift this year, and here at KWWL we want to help you take the best pictures possible this holiday season.

Here are some tips for more professional-looking shots:

-Use a tripod or set your camera on a steady surface.  Especially when the lights are low, it will keep your shots from blurring.

--Move closer - Instead of zooming in on your little cuties, take a few steps toward them.  This will help your camera focus, and make your shots sharper.

--Take the picture with your back to the light/have the picture's subject facing the light.  This will illuminate their face, making for a better shot.

--Pay attention to the background.  Be careful that there is nothing sticking out or around your subject.

--Look for action and reaction. Anticipate the smile of suprise as your little one opens that special present, or as family enters your home.

--Try the rule of thirds:  Instead of centering the subject, position him to the left or right of center.

So you don't miss any moments this Christmas, make sure your camera battery is fully charged, and have extras or the charger packed.  Pack an extra memory card -- You don't want to have to choose which memories to keep and which to delete.  Assign someone to be in charge of pictures.  There's always someone in charge of drinks, desserts, salads... Why not assign someone to take the pictures?

We hope these tips help you capture lasting magical memories this holiday season.
