North Liberty considering widening Highway 965

NORTH LIBERTY (KWWL) -- The North Liberty city council is considering widening Highway 965 from a battered two-lane to a remodeled five-lane.

Just one week ago two people died on Highway 965 when a driver lost control of her car and slid into the path of a semi carrying jet-fuel.  The driver and a passenger died at the scene; the driver of the semi was not hurt.

But this crash, among others has many worried about the safety of the road.

"I think there's not enough lights for one thing," said North Liberty resident Theresa Lemek.  "It's just getting very, very busy and it's narrow, dangerous."

Tuesday night the North Liberty city council approved a seven-phase master plan which among other things could include widening the highway to five lanes.  A project that would take 15 years to complete.

"You really can't go anywhere without being on 965 so being able to travel up and down it with realative ease is important to just about everybody," said council member Chris Hoffman.

A gloomy and rainy afternoon didn't stop people from making it out early to the campgrounds Friday. By the afternoon, Scales Pointe Campground and Marina in North Liberty, was full of RVs, tents, and houseboats ready to celebrate the Memorial Day weekend. "We don't worry about the weather. We just put a tent up, put a poncho on, and drink in the rain," Mike Kirk said. Kirk said he's been camping at the same spot for five years now and that it's the best place to be. ...More >>
