New trial denied for CR teachers strip searched during Presidential rally

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) -- A federal judge has denied a new trial for two former Cedar Rapids teachers who claimed they were illegally strip searched during a rally for President Bush in 2004.

U.S. District Judge Linda Reade (read) on Tuesday said the damages awarded to Alice McCabe and Christine Nelson were adequate.

During the initial trial in May, a jury awarded the women a total of $750,000. Reade threw out the award, saying it was excessive. The judge lowered the award to $75,000 and told the women then could accept it or have a retrial.

During a second trial in October, a jury awarded the woman more than $55,000.

McCabe and Nelson sought a third trial, which the judge has now denied.
