North Iowa parents cited for child found in sub-zero cold

LAURENS, Iowa (AP) -- A northern Iowa couple has been cited for child endangerment after their 7-year-old son was found in subzero temperatures.

The boy, who was underdressed, was placed in protective custody by the Iowa Department of Human Services.

Police Chief Tom Shaw says the boy was in good condition, but remains in state care.

Authorities say the boy was found on city street late Sunday. He was wearing boots but no socks, jeans with no underwear, a T-shirt and a light winter jacket. The National Weather Service says it was 8 below zero.

Shaw says the boy had walked at least a-half mile, and witnesses said he was shivering so badly he couldn't speak.

The boy's parents, Eugene and Stacy Lane, were cited for child endangerment and released.
