Bad weather hurting Salvation Army "Kettle Campaign"

Posted:

IOWA CITY (KWWL) -- The Johnson County Salvation Army says bad weather over the past two weeks is seriously hurting its holiday Red Kettle fundraising.

As of Tuesday, the Johnson County Salvation Army says it has raised $63,654 in its Red Kettles. Last year, it raised $70,788 in the Red Kettles. That is a difference of $7,134.  The group has only Tuesday and a half day Wednesday to raise money at local stores.

Overall to-date, the Johnson County Salvation Army has raised $174,420 toward its goal of $225,000.  The group says it will continue to count donations via regular mail, walk-in, and internet/phone donations toward this goal until January 15th, however reaching the goal prior to December 31st is preferred.

Money collected during this five week campaign, makes up over 50% of the group's annual operating budget.

In Cedar Rapids, The Salvation Army desperately needs volunteers to ring bells if it's going to make its red kettle fundraising goal of $586,000.  right now, There are more than 50 unassigned bell ringing shifts Tuesday alone.

The week of Christmas is busy with last minute shoppers and typically the best time for The Salvation Army kettles.  The Army was fortunate to secure additional kettle sites this
year, but hasn't had the people to keep the 30 spots filled.  A kettle stand without a kettle and bell ringer doesn't raise funds.

The Cedar Rapids Salvation Army is currently at about 67% of its goal and still has more than $190,000 to raise.  The Army has seen many cancellations from volunteers due to weather issues in the last week.

There are also fewer people signing up to volunteer in the first place.  For more information on how you can help, call volunteer manager Debra Applebee at 319-364-9131.  You can also view available shifts and sign up to volunteer online at http://www.tsacedarrapids.org  The Army welcomes businesses, service clubs, churches, families and other groups to sign up and ring together.
