Governor pushes to increase school dropout age

DES MOINES (KWWL) -- Iowa Governor Chet Culver is vowing to renew his push to increase the age a student must remain in school.

Culver said an increasingly complex workplace makes it even more important to keep students in school.

House Speaker Pat Murphy said raising the drop-out age to 18 could lower drop-out rates by 25 percent.

Critics contend that schools could face disruptions from students who are forced to stay in school.
