Culver makes budget cuts official

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) -- Gov. Chet Culver has signed an executive order for a 1.5 percent across-the-board cut in state spending that trims $91.4 million from the state budget.

Culver proposed the cuts last week.

Culver also has called for lawmakers to trim an additional $10 million from the budget, bringing to more than $178 million in cuts the governor has ordered to offset a projected shortfall caused by shrinking state tax collections.

Iowa's constitution forbids a budget deficit, so Culver had little choice but to act in signing the order on Monday.

The spending cuts are for the budget year that ends June 30.

One of Culver's first duties after lawmakers convene next month will be to propose a budget for the new fiscal year.

State Auditor David Vaudt has warned of a projected $600 million shortfall in that year.
