Murder plea draws emotional outburst

Waterloo (KWWL) - The family of a murdered Waterloo woman let out an emotional outburst as the man accused of murdering her pleaded guilty.

Dewayne Craft admitted to killing Shayla Todd last September.  Her body was found beaten and strangled in the apartment the two shared.  An autopsy determined Todd died of strangulation and blunt trauma.  Court documents allege the couple's two children witnessed the attack on their mother.

On Monday Craft pleaded guilty to second degree murder in Black Hawk County District Court, avoiding a possible life sentence.  During the hearing, family and friends burst into tears and shouted at Craft.  One man had to be escorted from the courtroom.

Friends and family also testified to tell Craft the pain he'd inflicted on the family

"She's supposed to be here to raise her children, to see her daughter become a woman her sons become men. That will never happen because of him," Todd's aunt said.

Craft was sentenced to 60 years in prison.
