Marion couple wins $1 million Powerball prize

DES MOINES, Iowa (KWWL) -- A dinner with friends turns into a million dollar story for an eastern Iowa couple.

Susan and Clyde Hendricks of Marion claimed their $1 million prize Monday at Iowa Lottery headquarters in Des Moines. Both said they were still a bit in shock over their good fortune.

"I think it's just amazement," Susan Hendricks said.

Her husband echoed her thoughts.

"It's unbelievable," Clyde Hendricks said. "I can't explain it. It's like you're in a trance or something."

The Marion couple said they just happened to buy a Powerball ticket while in a nearby community having dinner with friends and looking at holiday lights. And with that spur-of-the-moment purchase, they ended up winning a $1 million prize!

The Hendricks won their $1 million prize in Saturday's $54.7 million Powerball drawing. The winning numbers that night were: 3-14-19-32-54 and Powerball 24. The Power Play® number was 5. Because the Hendricks had added the Power Play® option to their ticket, the normal $200,000 prize they won for matching the first five numbers was multiplied by five for a total prize of $1 million.

No one won the Powerball jackpot in Saturday's drawing, so it increases to $62 million for Wednesday.

Susan Hendricks said that when she initially suggested to her husband that they buy a Powerball ticket, he'd said they didn't need one. But he relented and went into a convenience store in Swisher to buy the ticket.

"I just thought it was a waste of money," Clyde Hendricks said with laugh on Monday. "I have a different opinion now! I would highly recommend it!"

When he went into the convenience store, the clerk asked him if he'd like to add the Power Play to his ticket. Clyde said he didn't know exactly what is was but decided to add it to the easy-pick ticket.

"I didn't know what Power Play was," he said. "But she explained it and I thought, ‘Oh, what the hay. It's only another $1!' So I did it!"

Susan Hendricks, 63, works at Kirkwood Community College and Clyde Hendricks, 62, works as an engineer at Vector Corp. in Marion.  The couple say they plan to use their winnings to pay off their mortgage and other bills and to add to their retirement accounts. They both said they plan to continue working.

"I don't know if I'm ready to retire, but it sure will be nice to be more secure," Clyde said.

Susan said they never anticipated winning a big prize.

"Can you believe that?" she asked. "What a miracle this is for us. You cant even imagine the peace it gives you to know that you can truly retire someday and you don't have to worry about anything."

Clyde said they already had helped with flood-recovery efforts in the Cedar Rapids area and that they likely would use some of the winnings to help victims of this past summer's devastation.

"I think we'll probably end up giving some money to some of the flood victims, just doing what we can and spreading it around because we're blessed!" he said.
