More than 500 people get help for Christmas

WATERLOO (KWWL) Thanks to the cooperation and generosity of several churches more than 500 people are getting help for Christmas this year.

Laurie Reincheld is getting some help, but also lending some help. This is her eighth year volunteering for the St. Vincent DePaul Christmas Basket Distribution.

Reincheld is also a recipient this year due to the economy. Reincheld still has her job, but with a family of seven, lives on a tight budget.

"My husband's water pump went out in his truck, an expense we weren't expecting so that took a chunk out of what we had budgeted for Christmas," said Reincheld.

Distribution Coordinator Karen Buchanan said there is an increase in people asking for assistance this year.

"People lost their jobs not too long ago and just want toys for their kids for Christmas," said Buchanan.

Reincheld doesn't take this generosity for granted. That's why she and her 12-year-old daughter are helping out.

"This is nice to give back to the community someone who's giving me something I can give my time to them to help out other people," said Reincheld.

People picked at least two toys per child, plus stocking stuffers, winter clothes and food. All the items were donated.

"This is through others generosity, and we're glad we're able to do this. We hear people say if it wasn't for us, their children wouldn't have Christmas," said Buchanan.

Reincheld is thankful to have a little extra help this Christmas and hopes by next year things are better for everyone.

"I pray it will get better. I have faith it will get better," said Reincheld.
