Web of crimes results in more robbery charges

IOWA CITY (KWWL) -- Iowa City Police have filed robbery charges on two persons for the August 4 armed robbery of Hy-vee Gas. One of those charged, Akhinea Deon Cox, was already in jail for robbing two other IC area convenience stores.

The most recent charges re the result of a narcotics search warrant that was served last night, December 18.

An August 4, Hy-Vee Gas on 260 Stevens Dr., was robbed by a black male with braided hair. The suspect threatened the clerk was a handgun during the robbery. Police believe a second suspect acted as a lookout during the robbery. Another victim was robbed at gunpoint in the parking lot by the second suspect.

Subsequent ICPD investigation developed Cox and Patrick James Bland as possible suspects.

Unrelated to the Hy-Vee Gas robbery, the ICPD Street Crimes Action Team obtained a search warrant for narcotics at 840 Maggard St. 310. Marijuana, a stolen PlayStation 3 game system, and a stolen 2008 Hyundai passenger car were seized by police. The PlayStation had been reported as stolen from an Iowa City residence on September 11. The car had been reported as stolen from the southeast side of Iowa city on December 17.

A resident, Alisha Monique Thornton, admitted knowledge and use of the marijuana as well as knowledge that the PlayStation was stolen. Bland, also a resident, admitted knowledge of the stolen PlayStation as stated he had smoked some of the marijuana immediately prior to the officers' arrival. Bland was in possession of the keys to the stolen vehicle. Both Thornton and Bland were arrested.

Street Crime Action Team officers knew Bland was a suspect in the Hy-Vee Gas robbery. He was transported to the police department and interviewed. Bland admitted to participating in the robbery at the Hy-Vee Gas with Cox, confirming ICPD's suspicions. He further admitted robbing the second victim in the parking lot.

Cox remains in jail for to her crimes, including the August 17 robbery of Delimart and the November 9 robbery of Gasby's.

A criminal charge is merely an accusation and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
