"You'll Shoot Your Eye Out": BB gun safety this holiday season

WATERLOO (KWWL) Chances are you've seen the holiday classic "A Christmas Story" where the character Ralphie wants a BB gun for Christmas, but everyone says he'll shoot his eye out.

This holiday season, area police departments are worried about BB guns too. The Cedar Rapids Police Department is asking parents *not to purchase BB guns, pellet guns or air guns for their children for Christmas -- to help reduce criminal mischief.

The Waterloo Police Department said parents need to make sure children are responsible and ready before buying a BB gun.

Shooting a BB gun is about fun, marksmanship and especially safety for seven-year-old Jack Kelley. But before Jack could fire a shot, his dad made sure he understood the responsibility that comes with it.

"That you always shoot it with an adult and you have safety glasses and when you're not ready to shoot you have the safety on and you point it straight up in the air," said seven-year-old Jack Kelley.

Captain John Beckman with the Waterloo Police Department said parents need to use common sense, just like the Kelleys.

"You know your child. You know if they're reasonably responsible and you have to weigh that against your giving them a device that could potentially cause damage or injury," said Captain Beckman.

Captain Beckman said Waterloo saw vandalism in May from BB or pellet guns, but he's not opposed to BB guns in the right hands.

That's why Jack Kelley is a good example of properly using a BB gun to learn about marksmanship and responsibility.
