Police warn against buying guns for Christmas

CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -- The Cedar Rapids Police Department is asking parents for their help in reducing the number of criminal mischief's that typically occur during the months of December and January.

Parents are asked not to purchase BB guns or pellet guns or air soft guns for their children as gifts. According to the department, a majority of each year's Criminal Mischief reports that are from BB guns are when kids are on break from school during January, march, July, August, November and December.

The guns are typically used during a week long spree or on a weekend. There are very few occasions that are during the day and happen usually during the overnight hours.

The department also asks parents to check on where your kids are between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m. There is a City Missile Ordinance which no one can "propel" any type of item that would hit, injure or endanger any person, animal, or property. There is also a "Curfew for Minors" which restricts anyone 15 and younger to be out between 11:00 p.m. and 6 a.m. unless they are with their parents.
