Former Iowa State Representative Killed in Car Crash

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) -- Former Republican state Representative Barbara Finch, 56,  died Wednesday in a three-vehicle car crash in Minnesota.

A Minnesota State Patrol report says Finch, of Ames, was headed north on Interstate 35 when the driver of a southbound pickup truck lost control, slid into the median and then into oncoming traffic in Freeborn County, about 11 miles north of the Minnesota-Iowa border. The pickup truck collided with Finch's van, which spun out of control and was hit by a northbound semitrailer truck.

Her daughter, Erin Finch, 25, was a passenger in the van and suffered non-life-threatening injuries, the patrol said.

The pickup truck driver, Karl Grubbs, 47, and his passenger, Donna Grubbs, 63, both of Rimrock, Ariz., were taken to Naeve Hospital in Albert Lea with non-life-threatening injuries.

The driver of the semi, Robert Brandt, 64, of Litchfield, Minn., was not injured.

Finch last served in office in 2002.

House Republican Leader Kraig Paulsen issued a statement saying Finch was a remarkable public servant. Paulsen says Finch's passion for making Iowa a better place to live will be missed.
