Steam energy back... for now

Cedar Rapids (KWWL) - Things are back to normal for many downtown businesses in Cedar Rapids, after the cold weather damaged the steam system at Alliant Energy's 6th Street generating station Tuesday night.

The three temporary boilers at the plant are back up and running. On Wednesday, workers added more insulation to the 150,000 pound boiler to help protect the ventilation system from future adverse weather.

Alliant says everything is okay now, but customers are not in the clear.

"We're going to continue to be vulnerable throughout the winter, just as we've been vulnerable since the floods. Simply because we don't have the redundancy in the system, that we're used to," Ryan Stensland said

Alliant Energy began using the three boiler's in response to the summer's flood.
