Iowa man ordered to pay restitution after 40 years

BARRON, Wis. (AP) -- A Barron County judge has ordered a former teacher convicted of abusing a boy nearly 40 years ago to pay more than $14,500 in restitution.

Dale Soppe, of Fairfield, Iowa, was sentenced to 60 days in jail, followed by two years of probation, after pleading guilty to fourth-degree sexual assault in a plea deal.

One of Soppe's former students, Richard Hinde, accused Soppe of molesting him in 1968 and 1969 when he was 13. Hinde says it started in the Western Dubuque School District in Epworth, Iowa, and continued the next year in Barron County.

The judge ordered the 73-year-old last month to pay more than $14,500 for Hinde's counseling. In a statement, Hinde, who lives in Hillsdale, Wis., says the case's outcome doesn't erase his pain.
