Snow plows battle snow and you

DUBUQUE (KWWL) - Brian Odefey has been plowing the roads of Dubuque for seven years.

"Its started to feel like last year," said Odefey.

He's seen the same thing every winter. Ice, snow, salt, sand, and yes, timid drivers.

"People see a big truck coming, all the lights coming and they kinda slam on the breaks so I give, I try to give a good safe distance when I'm behind a car," said Odefey.

Using a video game like controller, he can plow, de-ice, spray and scrap the roads of snow. But he says there are somethings you can do as a driver to help make his job easier.

"You wanna stay back, we got snow flying and salt coming off the back. We don't wanna get in an accident either," said Odefey.

Also don't try to pass a plow. You risk getting in an accident or hitting a wing blade. In this case patience means safety.

"We can't go that fast and e don't wanna go that fast and year people cut out in front of me," said Odefey.

Which is also not a good idea because this big equipment isn't winter proof.

"No matter how big you are, you can still slide," said Odefey.

There are 15 plows out in Dubuque Tuesday night. They say one thing that makes this storm more difficult to plow than most is the temperature.

The colder it is the less likely the salt will stick; Meaning getting those roads clear might take a lot longer.
