Steam and heat shortage

Cedar Rapids (KWWL) - It's cold outside and inside for Cedar Rapids businesses.

Icy temperatures have caused a shortage of steam in Cedar Rapids, leaving many downtown workers shivering.

The near-zero temperatures knocked out some temporary boilers Tuesday and resulted in the steam loss, prompting Alliant Energy to ask that downtown building owners lower thermostats to 55 degrees. Quaker Oats and Cargill Corp. also were asked to reduce steam use.

The temporary boilers had been brought in to replace flood-damaged equipment and weren't protected from the cold. The temperatures caused pumps that feed water into the boilers to malfunction.
