Marion man charged with first-degree murder

MARION (KWWL) - Marion police are investigating the town's first murder in nearly two years and they believe it all stemmed from just hands and fists. Police arrived at 235 Ridge Court on Sunday night to find Daniel Meade unconscious. He was taken to St. Luke's Hospital in Cedar Rapids. From there he was airlifted to University Hospitals in Iowa City where he was pronounced dead.

A neighbor says she saw a truck speed from the murder scene to Kim Polley's home, a few houses away. Police showed up about a half hour later.

"They brought the guy out on a stretcher and I was wondering if he was okay and his arm flopped and I kind of wondered if he had passed away or not and apparently he has," said Sara Jacobmeyer.

Early Monday morning, police stopped Polley as he drove on Highway 13 and arrested him for first-degree murder. Police won't say why Polley would allegedly beat Meade to death.

"We have a low homicide rate as you know we're still the safest city in the state of Iowa," said Marion Police Chief Harry Daugherty.  "These things are unfortunate when they happen and we deal with them the best we can."

Marion police did say that Polley and Meade knew each other, but to what extent is unknown at this time. For now, the murder investigation continues and funeral arrangements are pending for Daniel Meade.
