Dubuque sex abuser no longer a priest

DUBUQUE (AP) -- The Archdiocese of Dubuque says a man who was convicted of fondling several boys at a Catholic church in Dubuque is no longer a priest.

In a statement released Friday, the archdiocese says the Pope Benedict XVI had granted Timothy DeVenney's request for a "dispensation from the obligations of the clerical state."

The statement says DeVenney accepted a decree of dispensation on Sept. 22, and since then has not been a priest.

DeVenney was ordained a priest in 1993. In 1997, he pleaded guilty to assaulting boys at St. Columbkille church. He was sentenced to 10 years in prison and was released after serving four years.
