Voluntary layoffs sought by Whirlpool plant

MIDDLE AMANA (KWWL) -- Whirlpool Corporation confirmed that they are seeking voluntary layoffs at its plant in Middle Amana.

Employees were told this week that the company is looking for 150 voluntary layoffs by January 5th.

The cuts are in addition to 440 workers who lost their jobs earlier this year.

Below is a statement from Whirlpool:

- On December 8, plant management at the Amana facility announced that it would be seeking voluntary layoffs of 150 employees, which would be effective January 5, 2008.
- These are in addition to the approximately 440 employees currently on layoff from the Amana plant, and are due to continued softness in demand in the marketplace.
- Because this is related to the unprecedented challenges and volatility in the marketplace, we do not currently have a timetable for when employees could be called back.  It's our hope that the market stabilizes quickly, as it is in all our best interests to get our employees back to work.
