New check scam hits Eastern Iowa

WATERLOO (KWWL) -- If you get a check for thousands of dollars in the mail, it might be too good to be true.

We talked Tuesday to one woman who says she got a fake check.  She asked not to be identified, ut wants others to be aware of this scam.

"My concern is with the economy they way it is that people are hurting for money, they're going to get these checks in the mail and not even think twice about cashing them, and then they're gonna be more in debt than they were to being with."

The woman received a check for $4700.   A letter with the check told her to pay $2900 in return.

The letter came from Zigma Alternatives Incorporated with a Canadian address.

If you receive a similar check and letter, police say throw it away.
