Culver budget cuts could include university funding

WEST DES MOINES (AP) -- Gov. Chet Culver has outlined $75 million in cuts in state spending that he says are needed due to the ailing economy.

Culver detailed the cuts Tuesday before the Iowa Taxpayers Association at a suburban Des Moines hotel.

Among the cuts Culver says he is seeking are hiring freezes, reductions in out-of-state travel, reductions in equipment purchases and cuts to funding for the state's three universities. He also wants to return $12.1 million to the general fund that had been allocated to Iowa Homeland Security and the alcohol beverages division, and he calls for delaying construction of a $37 million office building.

Culver says the cuts would enable the state to respond quickly to any emergencies that should arise.
