Controversial referendum vote Tuesday for Wapsie Valley

FAIRBANK (KWWL) -- Voters will brave the elements Tuesday for a very controversial school referendum in Wapsie Valley.

The district wants to raise the maximum property tax levy in order to help pay for two new elementary schools in Fairbank and Readlyn. It's the third time the issue's been put to voters. In September, voters narrowly passed $8 million in bonds but the tax levy issue failed by less than one-percent. In that election, Fayette County Sheriffs say automated phone calls known as 'spoofing' passed false information just before the election.

Polls are open Tuesday from 7:00 am to 8:00 pm.

Also Tuesday, voters in the Denver Community School District will vote on the use of local option sales tax for property tax relief and to pay for building improvements and equipment. Polls in Denver open from noon until 8:00 pm.
