WATERLOO(KWWL) - Those braving the winter weather conditions on eastern Iowa roadways have their hands full, battling slick roads and constant down poor of sleet.

"I don't mind the winter weather if I don't have to drive in it. It was a solid sheet of ice this morning in Bettendorf and that's where I came from and that I don't like," Amy Kuns of Clear Lake said.

To make travel as safe as possible workers with the Iowa Department of Transportation will be covering road ways with salt, sand, and brine.

"If it starts raining right now we'll treat every thing," Brian Miller of the Iowa DOT said.

To stay ahead of the storm the DOT uses the latest in weather technology as well as some old school methods.  DOT garages communicate with one another to find out what kind of weather is heading its way.

"We all talk to one another as things move though the area. We pretty much know what's coming because those people have had it first," Miller said.

For the most part drivers are letting the DOT workers do their job, but this might just be the start to a long winter.

"It's kind of scary. Yeah, we all get pretty tired pretty fast when we get these long storms," Miller said.
