Harkin announces more than $31,000 for research at the University of Iowa

WASHINGTON, D.C. (KWWL) -- U.S. Senator Tom Harkin (D-IA) announced today that the University of Iowa will receive a $31,500 grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services for research. The university will use these funds to research heart and vascular diseases.

Harkin is the Chairman of the Senate panel that funds health initiatives.

"The University of Iowa continues to impress the research community with its advanced findings and this funding will help support their work as they study heart and vascular diseases," Harkin said. "The results of such research will add to our scientific understanding and will improve the quality of life for people in Iowa and across the country."

Harkin has been a long-time supporter of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the federal agency responsible for medical research.

Harkin led the effort to double NIH funding over five years, while President Bush has proposed freezing funding for the NIH at $29.3 billion.
