Snow removal businesses prep for winter weather

WATERLOO (KWWL) With snow on the way, it's prep time for Jason Thompson, owner of 1st Call Lawn Care in Waterloo.

"We always pay close attention to the weather. We have it on the computers and tune into the television stations and everything. We try to have all the plows on the trucks, fueled up and all the fluids checked. As soon as it's done snowing, we plow all night and day if we have to," said Jason Thompson.

Before the snow falls, Thompson and his six winter employees hook up the plows to the trucks, test the plows and load up plenty of sand and salt.

Thompson's primary source of income is lawn care and landscaping.

"The snow removal is extra. We really don't count on it because you don't know when it's going to snow," he said.

Snow removal might be extra, but it has the potential to keep Thompson very busy... like last winter.

"Last winter it seemed like it snowed every other day and we were out there all the time. We didn't have time to fix some equipment, we just had to get by with it until spring," said Thompson.

Thompson said despite tougher economic times, he still has plenty of customers. If we have a snow-filled winter again, he expects even more calls from people who get sick of shoveling.
