Vehicle registration fees changing January 1

Posted:

CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -- Some vehicle and trailer title registration fees will increase under a new Iowa law that takes effect January 1, 2009.

"The increased registration fees will apply to new or used trucks purchased on or after January 1, 2009," said Mike Stevenson, Linn County Treasurer. "In most cases, fees will not increase for vehicles that were titled and registered to their owners in Iowa prior to January 1, 2009."

The additional money raised under the TIME 21 program will help pay for road construction and maintenance in the state over the next 20 years. TIME 21 stands for Transportation Investment Moves the Economy in the 21st Century.

Individuals with a December renewal will receive two notices including the amount due if paid by December 31 as well as the amount due if paid on or after January 1, 2009. People receiving these renewal notices are encouraged to look at them closely, as it may cost less to renew registrations in December.

The new fees effective January 1, 2008 are posted on the Linn County Treasurer's web site at www.linncounty.org/treasurer.

Anyone with questions about the new fees should contact the Linn County Treasurer's Office at (319) 892-5500. More information and a list of questions and answers can be found on the Iowa Department of transportation web site at www.iowadot.gov/time21.
