GM plans to lay off 2,000 employees

DETROIT (KWWL)-- Sagging U.S. auto sales is forcing a major car company to cut the number of workers in three of its factories.

A General Motors spokesman says the company will lay off roughly 2,000 factory workers in early 2009.

According to a company spokesman GM will cut shifts at factories in Lordstown, Ohio, Orion Township, Michigan, and Oshawa, Ontario in February due to a lack of consumer demand for their products.

The company plans to lay off 890 workers at the factory in Ohio and 390 employees at the plant in Michigan on February 2.

An additional 700 workers will be laid off in Oshawa, Ontario on February 9.
