Decorah to get VA clinic after long campaign

DECORAH (KWWL) -- After a long campaign, Decorah will get a new V.A. Outpatient Clinic.

In May, we showed you veterans living in and around Decorah currently have to travel three hours one-way to get to the nearest V.A. Hospital in Iowa City. They started a postcard campaign lobbying Iowa lawmakers for a clinic in Decorah. Well, it worked. Iowa Congressman Tom Latham announced the Department of Veterans Affairs approved opening 16 clinics, including one in Decorah.

"Our nation's veterans were made a promise, and I've been working to ensure the federal government keeps that promise," said Rep. Latham in a release. "Secretary Peake and I have made sure that the veterans of Decorah will have access to quality health care through this new outpatient clinic, rather than having to travel to distant VA clinics at a cost of great time and money."

Latham expects the clinic will open as early as next fall.
