Iowa City shops weather economic storm

IOWA CITY (KWWL) -- More bad news for the economy, Holiday sales are still down from last year. But shops in Downtown Iowa City say they are weathering the storm better than expected.

Ritu Jain owns textiles, a store specializing in women's clothing and accessories. She says the unique selection of wares at the shops downtown draw customers all the way from Chicago. A downtown holiday open house kicks off this weekend.

"There's over 20 businesses participating. We're going to do gifts with purchase, we're going to have treats, raffles," said Jain. "It's just a way of promoting downtown and bringing more people downtown."

Jain says downtown stores don't usually make a big point to compete with malls, simply because they have things the mall does not.
