Senior Companion Program

Waterloo (KWWL) - The Senior Companion Program (SCP) of Hawkeye Community College is inviting the public to learn about volunteer opportunities available with the program.

Senior Companions are volunteers who support their peers by assisting other seniors with daily tasks and providing companionship at their homes. As a result, many seniors in the community have the opportunity to remain living independently in their own homes. To become a senior companion, volunteers must be age 60 or over, meet income eligibility requirements, and be willing to work 15 to 20 hours a week. Volunteers enjoy a tax-free stipend for their time, meal and mileage reimbursement, monthly training sessions, and paid time off.

The Senior Companion Program is a federally and state funded program sponsored by Hawkeye Community College. The program provides citizens age 60 or over an opportunity to support their peers by assisting other seniors with daily tasks and providing companionship at their homes. Through their dedication and service, Senior Companion volunteers allow other seniors within the community to continue to live independently. Currently, the program is funded for 83 Senior Companions to serve clients in Black Hawk, Bremer, and Buchanan counties.
