Gold coin found in Johnson County red kettle

IOWA CITY (KWWL) -- While counting donations in a Salvation Army red kettle, a Hillsbank employee found a gold coin.

The coin was taken to the Dean Oakes Coin Shop where it was identified as an 1870 Gold 1/4 Dollar. It's an authentic private issue coin of the Frontier and Co. and is valued between $250-$300.

The coin shop will offer the coin to the highest bidder with all the proceeds going to Johnson County Salvation Army. Bids will be accepted through Dec. 14.

The winner will be announced on Dec. 14 at the Iowa City Coin Show at Sycamore Mall.
