Bad economy may be behind rash of bank robberies

WATERLOO (KWWL) - Another frustrating day for the Cedar Falls Police Department, which is investigating a fourth robbery in just as many weeks. This one happened at the Wells Fargo Bank on University Avenue shortly before noon Monday.

"There definitely some similarities between the description that we received and the method of robbery that he has performed at other banks, " Police Chief Jeff Olson said.

The number of robberies in the state of Iowa has been on the rise for several years.

In 2003 there were 1,131 and by 2007 there were more than thirteen hundred according to state agencies.

"This is extremely frustrating and is unprecedented here. We put a lot of effort into this after the first one actually, but after the second one we really started putting a lot of increase effort into what we're doing here," Chief Olson said.

The Cedar Falls Police Department has been working with banks to help catch those responsible for the this most recent crime wave.

"We have met with all the individual banks and discussed their alarm protocol and what they can expect from us," Olson said.

The Police may have caught a break during this most robbery. The suspect in this case usually wears a mask or a scarf to cover his face, but this time it fell down which gave police a better view of who they are dealing with.
