Fire ruins Solon's only grocery store

SOLON (KWWL) Solon's only grocery store opened in 1975. Sam Lensing took over Sam's Main Street Market about five years ago from his former father-in-law.

Around 1:30 Friday morning, Lensing got a call from his security system saying the alarm was going off.

"I came and noticed the smoke coming out of the rafters and there was a glow of light in there that shouldn't have been on. Luckily I left my key at home. In a panic I may have tried to go inside," said owner Sam Lensing.

Lensing then ran across the street where one of his employees' lives. She called 9-1-1.

You can see signs of the fire on the roof, but most of the damage was inside the grocery store. Lensing said the damage is devastating. Mayor Pro Tem and boys basketball coach Brad Randall said the community plans to help Lensing get up and running again.

"The community's going to rally around Sam, get him going in the right direction soon. Very unfortunate what happened, but we're all behind Sam," said Randall.

The full-service grocery store means a lot to the small community.

"It's in the hub of town. Of course a lot of people get their groceries there, and they also have some lunches there. A lot of kids in the Solon community have worked there," said Randall.

"I appreciate all the thoughts right now. There's been a lot of offers for help and when the time's right I'll gladly accept it," said Lensing.

Lensing wants to re-open as soon as possible. Until Sam's Main Street Market re-opens, the nearest grocery stores are in North Liberty or Iowa City.
