People line up early for Black Friday deals

DUBUQUE (KWWL) - "Black Friday" is just hours away. Retailers hope Black Friday can get them out of the red. Consumer spending is down across the board and consumer confidence is at a 28 year low.

Many shoppers hope that translates into big deals and they lined up early to cash in. For some, Black Friday started Thursday.

It was certainly a chilly thanksgiving night but you wouldn't know it by the looks of things at the Best Buy parking lot in Dubuque.

That's because some people have been camped out since early Thursday afternoon; all waiting for these doors to open tomorrow to get the best deals before anyone else.

Cathy Klein and her daughters consider Black Friday shopping a family tradition.

"We were out here last Thanksgiving at 1:00 a.m., at Best Buy, freezing to death," said Klein.

Last years cold temperatures sparked this idea: Celebrate Thanksgiving here.

"Cooked turkey dressing, potatoes all the trimmings and everything right here in the parking lot of Best Buy," said Klein.

They've been her since 9:00 a.m. Thursday morning. Guaranteeing her family the first spot in line. At four o'clock, Scott Kartman arrives.

"It's a little nippy our here but enough blankets and it's alright," said Kartman.

He says the lines start earlier and earlier each year. But it's worth the savings.

"If I get what I want I'm gonna save hundreds of dollars," said Kartman.

A few minutes later, first time shopper Joyce McCellan arrives.

"I heard it's gonna be busy and crazy so I thought well, I might as well do it, cause I'm in it for the savings," said McCellan.

By early Friday morning the line will be all the way at the end of the parking lot with hundreds of people trying ot get whatever deals they can, before it's too late.
