36th annual Turkey Trot a family tradition

DUBUQUE (KWWL) -- Before eating a big Thanksgiving feast -- some people decided to get in some exercise Thursday morning.

More than 1,000 people ran Dubuque Holy Family's "Turkey Trot" at Wahlert high school.

Runners could either enter a 2.5 or a 7.5 mile race.

Many people have made this annual race a part of their Thanksgiving tradition.

"I do this every year," said Heidi Sutter.  "When I was in high school here at Wahlert, we used to work this event.   I just used to love it and be inspired by it, so I think what I like to do now is make it a family event, and I ran today with my niece Madison and friends."

Race winners in each age category took home, not a trophy, but a turkey.
