100 killed in terrorist attack in Mumbai, India

MUMBAI, India (AP) -- Indian commandos have liberated some hostages and recovered a few bodies as they continue rescue efforts at a luxury Mumbai hotel attacked by terrorists.

Dozens of people are still trapped or held captive today, nearly a day after teams of heavily armed gunmen invaded two five star hotels, a popular restaurant, a crowded train station and a Jewish center. The attacks killed more than 100 people and wounded more than 300.

A previously unknown Islamic militant group claimed responsibility for what appeared to be a highly coordinated assault.

Witnesses say the gunmen had specifically targeted British and Americans.

Among those held captive were Americans, British, Italians, Swedes, Canadians, Yemenis and New Zealanders. Officials say among the dead are at least one Australian, Japanese and British national.

Mumbai has frequently been targeted in attacks blamed on Islamic extremists.
