UNI's Mahoney is Named Academic All-American

University of Northern Iowa junior linebacker Josh Mahoney was named to the 2008 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America® Football Team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). The announcement was made Wednesday, Nov. 26.

Mahoney was named to the University Division Academic All-America® second team. Mahoney becomes the sixth UNI football student-athlete to earn Academic All-America® honors since 1971.

Mahoney, a 6'1", 234-pound junior from Sioux Falls, S.D., has a perfect 4.0 grade point average in economics. Mahoney leads the Panthers in tackles this season with 106 stops, 39 of which are solos. He also has 6.5 tackles-for-loss, two pass breakups, a forced fumble, a fumble recovery and a 42-yard interception return. Mahoney is a part of a Panther defense that ranks No. 7 in the nation in scorin defense (16.25 points/game). Off the field, Mahoney is a Presidential Scholar and a member of the Dean's List.
